Gravely ZT HD 48 Kawasaki
The Gravely ZT HD 48 makes the most sense as a same-width comparison with the ZT XL 48. Both documented configurations use a 23 hp Kawasaki FR691V. Moving to the HD should therefore be evaluated as a deck, drive and adjustment decision, not an engine-power upgrade.
Where the hardware changes
Gravely's published ZT HD specification sheet identifies model 991269 with ZT-3100 transaxles and a fabricated 7-gauge X-Factor 3 deck. The foot lift selects fifteen positions from 1.5 to 5 inches. Maximum forward travel is approximately 8 mph.
Those details give you specific items to compare on a dealer quotation. They do not establish longer service life or a better finish than the XL without operating and maintenance evidence.
Compare the full footprint
The sheet lists 50.8 inches without the chute and 61.9 inches with it. Neither should be confused with the nominal 48-inch cutting width. The without-chute measurement is not permission to remove discharge protection for mowing.
Check the complete unit in its permitted configuration, including any collection equipment, against gates and storage. If width is the limiting factor, also consider the ZT HD 44, while matching its generation and equipment rather than assuming every HD shares identical details.
Separate the standard seat from accessories
The documented high-back seat has isolation and padded armrests. A suspension seat is listed separately as an accessory. Ask to see the seat actually included in the quote and test pedal reach after adjusting it.
The current Gravely product page confirms 991269. Published unit coverage is four years/500 hours, subject to applicable terms; older or used machines need their original coverage checked.
Choose the HD when its specific equipment addresses your mowing routine and the complete quote supports the premium. The model name alone is not enough to establish value.
Our ZT Score
7.7/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.
- Cut quality (30%): 7.8/10. Seven-gauge X-Factor 3 and fifteen settings support setup; cutting outcome remains untested.
- Build & durability (25%): 8.0/10. ZT-3100 and substantial deck construction merit hardware credit without a lifespan prediction.
- Comfort (20%): 7.6/10. Seat isolation and armrests support operator comfort; optional suspension seat is excluded.
- Value (15%): 7.1/10. HD upgrades can be useful at the same cut width, but their local price premium is unverified.
- Ease of use (10%): 7.6/10. Foot lift and height range help adjustment; complete machine width still constrains access.
Provisional research-based editorial assessment, not a hands-on test. Cutting results, ride quality and service life have not been measured. Model-specific owner consensus and comparable delivered US/Canadian prices were not established. Value depends on the actual configuration, property and local service support.
